Grand Rapids, Michigan is earning its reputation as one of the Midwest's best family road trip destinations — and one family's recent summer adventure shows exactly why.

The crown jewel was Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, where a stunning Chihuly glass exhibition, a massive American Horse sculpture, and the sprawling Lena Meijer Children's Garden kept kids and adults equally captivated for hours.

Beyond the gardens, the trip included hands-on fun at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, a beach day along Lake Michigan in Grand Haven, and a visit to John Ball Zoo — plus standout meals at local spots woven throughout.

A five-day stay in the walkable Cherry Hill Historic District made the pace relaxed and family-friendly. For Indianapolis families especially, a midway stop at Howard Park in South Bend turns the drive itself into part of the adventure.

Grand Rapids, Michigan is swapping out its shared scooter provider, replacing Lime with Veo starting September 1. Both operators will run side by side through September before Veo takes over exclusively in October.

The transition brings slightly lower standard rates, but the headline change is a new affordability program — just $5 a month unlocks 30 free daily riding minutes for qualifying residents, including SNAP and Medicaid recipients, veterans, students on financial aid, and others.

Veo plans to deploy around 500 vehicles this fall, scaling to as many as 2,000 by spring, with cargo bikes and tricycles joining the fleet next year. New safety tech — including LIDAR obstacle detection and AI-powered parking checks — is also on the way.

Steelcase is bringing collegiate esports center stage with its third annual Gaming GOAT Rodeo, a one-day tournament hosted at the Steelcase Learning & Innovation Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Eight university programs — including Michigan State, Ohio State, and the University of Michigan — will compete in a full day of action streamed live on Twitch from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

The event, backed by sponsors like Alienware Gaming and Red Bull, goes beyond competition: organizers aim to spotlight how esports programs are building real-world skills like teamwork, leadership, and communication among students.

"Esports continues to be a growing force in education," said Charlie Hunt of the Steelcase Gaming Community — and this tournament is designed to prove it.

Flanagan's Irish Pub, a beloved Downtown Grand Rapids institution since 1981, is making a comeback after a turbulent stretch that included legal troubles, a bank seizure, and a suspended liquor license.

New ownership has given the pub a striking makeover — swapping its signature dark-and-gold exterior for a bold red façade with gold lettering, drawing comparisons to Dublin's historic Temple Bar.

Along with the fresh paint comes a fresh identity: the spot will reopen as Flanagan's Social House, featuring new wood flooring and a concept designed to shift from daytime restaurant to nightlife bar. Guinness will still be on tap, with a refreshed menu to match. No opening date has been set, but progress is steady.

Fall in West Michigan is packed with low-cost fun — and you don't need a big budget to make the most of it. From free art to stargazing to farm animals, the season offers something for every family.

Downtown Grand Rapids hosts ArtPrize, a free outdoor and indoor art festival stretching across the city. Zeeland's Pumpkinfest brings parades, petting zoos, and a pumpkin drop, while the Veen Observatory in Lowell opens its doors on fall evenings for just a few dollars.

Elsewhere, families can explore farm trails, cheer on kids at a marathon, catch a fall festival in nearly every community, or simply drive the back roads to soak in the color. Cider and donuts optional — but strongly recommended.
